Which beer actually wins?

Star ratings are useless — everyone gives their favourite five stars. So we don't use them. Battle Beers shows you two beers and asks one question: which would you rather drink?

Every answer feeds a global Elo ranking — the same maths chess uses to rank grandmasters. Thousands of head-to-heads later, the truth comes out.

How it works

Three taps to a fairer ranking

No reviews to write, no scores to agonise over. Just the pint you'd actually pick.

🍻

Two beers walk in

We show you a matchup from the same category — close in rating, so the choice is genuinely hard. Never the same pair twice in a session.

You pick one

The winner takes rating points from the loser. Beat a favourite and you take a lot; beat an underdog and you take almost nothing. Upsets move the board.

👑

A champion emerges

Each category crowns a winner, and the five champions fight for the overall crown. Every change of throne is recorded.

Questions

The fine print, in plain English

Do I have to sign up to vote?
No. Voting is completely anonymous and works the moment you open the arena — no account, no email, nothing. Signing up is only if you want a name on the contributor leaderboard or the champion emails.
What stops people rigging it for their favourite brewery?
Every rule runs on our server, not in your browser, so it can't be edited away: a cap of 24 votes a minute per device, a minimum gap between votes, and the same pairing blocked for 24 hours. Ratings and win counts have no write path from the app at all.
How does the Elo maths work?
Every beer starts at 1200 points. When you vote, points move from loser to winner — how many depends on how surprising the result was. A beer with fewer than 20 votes moves at nearly double speed so newcomers find their true level fast instead of languishing at the start line.
Can I add a beer that's missing?
Yes — there's an "Add a Beer" tab in the arena, and you can snap a photo of the can or tap. Submissions get checked for duplicates automatically and reviewed before they enter the voting pool, so the rankings stay clean.
What do you do with my data?
If you sign up we keep your email, whether you consented to marketing, and when. We record which country a vote came from — the country only, never a precise location, and always aggregated. We don't use third-party trackers or advertising cookies, and nobody can look up an individual's voting history: it isn't exposed to anyone.
